This Island Near Cozumel Was Nominated The Top Romantic Destination In Mexico

Share

A local tourism magazine called México Desconocido recently put out lists of some of the best destinations across the country. One of the categories is Romantic Destinations, and a tiny called Isla de la Pasión made that list.

Literally translating as “passion island,” it’s no surprise that this little piece of paradise in Mexico is on the list of nominees for the top romantic destination in the country. Where is this island, and what’s the appeal?

Here are all travelers need to know about Isla Pasion in the Mexican Caribbean.

Where Is Isla De La Pasion?
A quaint and tranquil spot on the northern coast of Cozumel in the state of Quintana Roo, Isla Pasion isn’t usually at the top of the list for a Riviera Maya travel itinerary. You might not have even heard of the place, but after doing a bit of a deep dive into what this island has to offer, it looks like an ideal getaway for those looking to get a little off the beaten path and, of course, indulge in a little romance.

The ‘isla’ consists of about half a mile of coastline along Cozumel Island’s central northern tip. It’s still off of Cozumel’s beaten path as it’s not accessible on foot or by car or motorbike but only by boat. Isla de la Pasion is also a privately-owned island, so the best way to visit here is through an all-inclusive day trip that you can book in Cozumel. Entry fees for the island will typically be included in your excursion ticket price.

Isla De La Pasion: What To Do
Lots of visitors to this little island rave about the calm waters that are easy for swimming, so this is great if you’re traveling with little ones. If you booked a trip here for the day and just want to chill out, there’s a long strip of white, sandy beach to explore: lounge the day away in a hammock or just lay out your beach towel, whatever you like!

If you want a bit of activity, rent a kayak for a romantic trip for two to explore the nearby waters at your leisure. Or, there are even stand-up paddleboards or water bicycles available to rent if you want to have a bit of fun with your favorite travel partner.

And to easily get to know the natural attractions in this part of Cozumel, you can book your excursion here to include a tour of the nearby Laguna Ciega. This lagoon is a section of water that links the rest of Cozumel to Isla de la Pasion, and it’s officially part of the Cozumel Protected Natural Area, where you’ll head out on a kayak to paddle your way through this jungle paradise to check out the unique flora and fauna living in the mangrove and the reef.

Tours to Isla de la Pasion are typically all-inclusive packages that come with some food and drink, transportation, as well as the accompaniment of the local guides. You can choose your favorite adventure for the island (beach time, kayak, or boat trip) and book a trip to this private island that fits your travel style.

Romance Is In The Air At Isla De La Pasion
This Cozumel destination is actually a popular spot for destination weddings with Mexicans, who typically travel in from other parts of the country to say their vows in front of their closest friends and family. There’s a little chapel here with a palapa roof where Catholic ceremonies are typically held.

Isla de la Pasion was originally known as “Mukyaj Peten” by the Mayans who inhabited the island. The beach here is the site where the local Mayans would pray to Ixchel, the Goddess of love and fertility. They’d pray for a happy marriage and healthy children, and the tradition is continued today as tourists come here to pray for blessings for their marriages and family.
