One month until single-use plastics banned in Cancun

Share

Benito Juárez Councilor Luis Pablo Bustamante says there is about one month left before companies, stores and businesses will be required to stop providing plastic straws and bags to customers.
He clarified that Cancun businesses have until September 29 to respect the ley Cancún sin plásticos, the newly passed law that will require businesses to stop providing single-use plastics in the municipality. He stressed that the Ecology Department will be the agency responsible for monitoring businesses in Cancun, including restaurants and supermarkets, to ensure they abide by the new law. Those who do not obey the new rules will receive penalties and fines by the management of ecology.
“The initiative of plastics is following its course. We are in a transition stage in which shops, industries need to make this transition,” he said adding that single-use plastics make up the most waste per day in Cancun.
For the rest of the state, the new State Regulation for the Management of Solid Waste will begin in about five months starting with the islands of Cozumel, Holbox and Isla Mujeres.
