Mexico has not signed an agreement with the US for foreigners to wait for their visa here, says Ebrard

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón denied today that Mexico has agreed to be a “safe third country”, as the Donald Trump government says, forcing it to accept foreigners in the national territory while waiting for the United States give or not the visa.

Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarified that Mexico will make a final position on Monday, but said that at the moment it is a unilateral decision of the United States.

The Government of President Lopez Obrador has said that foreigners will be allowed to stay in Mexico for humanitarian reasons and temporarily after receiving a subpoena from the United States immigration court and may apply for work permits.

Riot police brought about 120 people to buses and took them to the Barretal shelter, located about 22 kilometers from the San Ysidro border crossing. Authorities arrested about two dozen migrants who refused to be relocated. “We had to arrest 24 people who did not accept to vacate the public highway and we detected some who were using illegal drugs,” said Tijuana police chief Marco Sotomayor.
