CANCÚN | Autocar, one of the public transport concessionaires in Cancun has begun testing an electric bus equipped with video surveillance cameras and GPS in the Hotel Zone.

They seek to find out if this model meets the necessary requirements to provide transportation service in the city. It is a unit that does not have an engine, only battery and brakes.

“This is an electric test bus, with camera and GPS technologies. We are undergoing tests to see if they give the performance in the city of Cancun”, said Santiago Carrillo, director of the concessionaire, in an interview.

It is a Chinese brand, with capacity for 25 passengers. According to the manufacturer, it has a range of up to 200 kilometers, but that is what the Cancun dealers want to check.

It is only one unit that they are testing so far. And it is something that is commonly done in order to verify that the trucks fulfill all that they promise and are suitable to operate as public transport.

“They bring their buses to the city, they look at their performance, if they are going to be able to circulate in the city of Cancun,” he stressed.

He said that for now they are in the first charges, see how long it charges and how long it lasts.

“Already loaded see what else you have to check, because it does not have an engine, they do not bring boxes, they only bring brakes and a battery,” said the Autocar manager.

MODERNIZATION OF TRANSPORTATION
During the first hours of the test, some 60 or 70 kilometers passed, and only in the Hotel Zone of Cancun, reaching the center of the city, Mercado 28.

Santiago Carrillo commented that the price of each of these units is 4 million pesos. And in addition to performance, they will evaluate what the environmental benefits and potential economic savings would be compared to units that run on diesel or natural gas.

He ended by saying that in about two weeks they will test a natural gas unit. It is also a foreign-manufactured unit, as these vehicles are not built in the country. The company name is BusCar.

The tests of this electric bus will last about two weeks, while those of the vehicle that operates on natural gas would take about a month.

It should be noted that these tests arose in response to meetings with the authorities of Benito Juárez who have requested that public transportation in Cancun be modernized.
