Mexico’s national energy commission, the CFE, confirmed a power outage which hit 13 states including Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
“On December 28th an error occurred in the national charging and power generation grid. This caused a loss of approximately 7500 megawatts,” @CenaceMexico tweeted Monday.
The CFE reports that it received over 1,280,000 reports of power outages from across the country and said that they would work to resolve the problem as soon as possible.
In Mérida, large parts of the Centro were without power roughly between 2:35 and 3 p.m.
The power company also said that the power grid had suffered no permanent damage, as the error which caused the outage had been “a minor one.”
Users on social media expressed frustration with the situation and noted that telecommunication systems had been affected in a number of markets such as Cancun and some municipalities in Mexico state. Several users also noted that while the CFE is quick to minimize such outages, most of the damages are absorbed by users who often need to replace appliances burned out by power surges.
Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and many other political figures took to Twitter to reassure citizens that the problem was being dealt with. Most affected areas recovered electricity within an hour of the outage.
