CANCÚN | There is no denying that Cancun is a hugely popular Caribbean vacation destination. The tourism numbers are proof of that, but what you may not know is that it is actually the number one destination that Americans are interested in this winter, according to Tripadvisor. A recent survey that was conducted by the online travel company showed that Americans put the Caribbean or Mexico within the top ten places to visit this winter eight times out of ten. Furthermore, Cancun fell on the top five list as number one for favorite international destinations for Americans this winter.
What isn’t there to love about a warm sunny place where the sun shines more than 300 days a year, the temperatures rarely drop below 60 degrees, and there are white sand beaches and aqua-blue waters as far as the eye can see? But while these may be the main reasons for so many Americans choosing Cancun for their winter vacation destination, it isn’t all that the popular city has to offer. From history to culinary masterpieces, there is much to explore in Cancun, and for those getting ready to visit, we’ll share some information that might give you some ideas as to what to do on a Cancun vacation.
Culinary Experiences
The food scene in Cancun is diverse and extensive and absolutely must be explored in some form. There is truly something for everyone, from the most discerning foodies to the lovers of all things casual. Gourmet dining, authentic Mexican from fine dining to street food, celebrity and Michelin-starred chefs, and the wonderful world of tequila are just a few options for experiencing Cancun’s exploding culinary scene.
Ancient History
You can begin your exploration of ancient Mayan history without leaving Cancun, as the city is home to a couple of its own ruins sites, like El Rey, which is located right in the Hotel Zone. But if you go just a little bit further outside of Cancun, you’ll have the opportunity to explore some of the most impressive Mayan ruins in the world, including Chichén Itzá. The trip will require a nearly three-hour drive, but the experience is worth it, and you can stop along the way to see other ruins.
Adventure Activities
Adventure abounds in Cancun, with a wide range of adventure activities that take place in the jungle and the Caribbean Sea. Snorkeling and scuba diving, swimming with whale sharks, riding an ATV or ziplining through the jungle, and swimming in natural limestone sinkholes called cenotes are just a few of the adventurous experiences you can have. Many of these activities can be enjoyed without even leaving the Cancun Hotel Zone, while others will take a little bit of traveling.
World-Class Amenities
Anybody who has visited Cancun, or any other Mexican Caribbean vacation destination for that matter, has likely experienced first-hand the superior level of service provided by those who work in the hospitality industry. From the offerings at the luxurious all-inclusive resorts to the attention to detail in so many of the restaurants throughout the city, the focus is always on providing the best experience. This is one of the biggest reasons the city is visited by so many.
Nightlife and Parties
While the mention of nightlife in Cancun might bring up images of rowdy spring breakers drinking and dancing at the club with way too loud music, there are actually nightlife options for everyone. For those looking to get out on the town but not too crazy, there are places like Carlos ‘n Charlie’s, Margaritaville, Senor Frog’s, and Coco Bongo, where it’s a more low-key party. Day and nighttime boat parties are also a thing in Cancun, for those looking for a more Mexican Caribbean-style party.
There are so many reasons to visit Cancun, and even more so in the wintertime when it’s cold in so many other places. And there is so much more to explore beyond the warm weather and beautiful beaches.
