The Cancun International airport has had to open a second terminal to keep up with the growing amount of tourists to the popular beach destination.

The managing company Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Southeast Airport Group) has announced that terminal 2 will open on July 14th to keep up with the surge tourist demand.

In a statement, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste said all airlines currently flying into Cancun International will continue to use Terminal 4.

But two of Mexico’s domestic airlines, Viva Aerobús and Volaris, will be moved from Terminal 4 to Terminal 2 to help alleviate the number of passengers using one terminal.

They added that in order to comply with health obligations issued by the Ministry of Health, they decided to reopen the terminal, which used to be one of the airport’s busiest before the pandemic.

The reopening of the terminal will also help prevent crowds of travelers at Terminal 4, which is where all airlines currently land.

The reopening of the terminal will include the application of screening questionnaires and temperature-taking at departures and arrivals.

Both Terminal 2 and 3 were closed in early April after an 80 percent reduction in passenger traffic.

Almost 70,000 tourists have visited Cancún since the resort city reopened for tourism almost a month ago according to Municipal tourism official Francisco López.

Mexico does not have any travel restrictions when entering the country.

Visitors do not need to self-quarantine or go through any testing upon arrival making Cancun one of the most popular post pandemic destinations when it reopened.
